Shanghai Baby

Detailed interior and architectural concepts were commissioned for this three level purpose built structure in Seminyak. On entry level a restaurant with a lounge bar and club above. The roof terrace is primarily a relaxation and break out space but would also be utilised for special events. An imaginary personality was created, a young affluent Chinese lady born in Shanghai and educated in Europe in the 1920’s. The building and interior is to be perceived as a residence rather than a commercial space, one with the expected deco era vibe and a personal feminine touch. From the unexpected villa ‘remnant’ at the entry to the bold terrazzo clad structure and teak detailing both grandeur and modernity coexist transporting the guest to an era and a land not quite understandable. The possibility to create a building absolutely fit for purpose and one that would create the optimum spaces and connections from the outset is a rare opportunity. Designing a structure in a foreign land is another opportunity and I set out to embrace the capabilities of the local contractors and elevate what are common materials and techniques. Accepting what should be executed very well and what would not formed the basis of many decisions underlying the final design.

Completion anticipated early 2016.
