Spice Temple Sydney 2008

Under the direction of Bates Smart

Spice Temple is intentionally tucked-away in a basement in the heart of the CBD. Entered via a discreet and mysterious doorway not unlike that to a nightclub, the arrival experience is one of discovery and surprise. The context is a rather raw shell of a 1930s commercial building and within it sits a warm, sumptuous and dramatically lit dining area entered through a crude timber ‘curtain’. The rawness and simplicity feature strongly with an emphasis on comfort and experience rather than a certain theme, decor or iconic statement. Punctual lighting and screening devices create a sense of space and privacy in an otherwise small venue.
